  • Especially important for remote dive sites.

  • Some shops make dive insurance (eg. DAN) mandatory.

6. Booking Deposit / Payment

  • A deposit (usually 20–50%) may be required to hold your spot.

  • Full payment is required for all courses prior to the courses being allocated to any student.

7. Personal Info & Sizing

  • We require your shirt & shoe size (for gear fitting).

  • Emergency contact and passport info (for insurance or marine park permits). Optional / Situation-Based

8.  Logbook

  • For proof of experience (some advanced dives require a minimum number of logged dives).

  • Nitrox certification: If you're planning to dive with enriched air.

  • Specialty certifications: For deep dives, wrecks, or cave diving

9. Equipment Checks

  • Ensure your personal diving equipment is well-maintained and serviced.

  • If you wish to test your gear, Pisces Diving offers a pool for this purpose.

10.  Health and Fitness

  • Self-Assessment: Assess your physical and mental readiness for diving.

  • Considerations: If it's been six months or longer since your last dive, consider booking a refresher course to refresh your skills.

Pre-Dive Briefing Overview

Before each dive, the dive leader (either a Dive Master or Instructor) conducts a briefing at our gazebo.

1.  Dive Site Information:

  • Details about the specific reef you'll be exploring, including its topography and unique features.

2.  Marine Life Expectations:

  • Insights into the types of marine species you might encounter, enhancing your underwater experience.

3.  Safety Procedures:

  • Clear instructions on emergency protocols, ensuring all divers are prepared for any unforeseen situations.

4.  Boat Procedures:

  • Guidelines on how to safely board and disembark from the semi-rigid inflatable boat (RIB), which is used for surf launches. Boat procedures will include safety guidelines for divers departing the beach to the ocean, from the ocean back on the beach and safety guidelines entering or exiting the ocean after each dive.

5.  Hand Signals:

  • Review of standard and site-specific hand signals to facilitate underwater communication.

6.  Buddy System:

  • Emphasis on the importance of the buddy system for safety and mutual assistance during the dive.

7.  Environmental Guidelines:

  • Education on the three "T's" of diving—No Touching, No Taking, No Teasing—to protect the delicate marine ecosystem.

8.  Equipment Checks:

  • Instructions on conducting thorough pre-dive equipment checks, both individually and with your buddy, to ensure functionality and safety.

We importantly emphasize and apply the 'SEABAG', protocol in diving

1.  'S' - Site Assessment

2.  'E' - Emergencies

3.  'A' - Activity

4.  'B' - Buoyancy Check

5.  'A' - Air

6.  'G' - Gear up & Go

By adhering to these briefing protocols, Pisces Diving ensures that each dive is not only safe and enjoyable but also contributes to the conservation of the stunning marine ecosystems of Sodwana Bay.

Sodwana Bay, on South Africa’s iSimangaliso Wetland Park coast, is one of the country’s premier scuba‑diving destinations—especially for pelagic encounters like Whale sharks, Ragged-Tooth Sharks and Manta Rays.

Here are the key safety considerations and best practices for diving:
1. Seasonal Conditions & Timing
  • Water Temperature: Ranges from 20°C (June–August) to ~27°C (January–March).  A 5 mm wetsuit (or 7 mm in winter) plus hood or chicken vest is recommended in cooler months.

  • Visibility: Generally 10–30 m, best between November and March when plankton levels are lower.

  • Currents & Swells:

    • Incoming Swell: Usually peaks December–February; moderate to strong on outer reefs.

    • Tidal Currents: Can be deceptive—always heed your guide’s briefing and surface‐marker buoy protocols.

2. Pre‑Dive Health & Certification

  • Experience Level: Many sites off Sodwana (e.g., 3-mile Reef) are deep (30–45 m) and require an Advanced Open Water certification plus deep‑diving specialty.

  • Buoyancy Control: Crucial for navigational safety around overhangs and reef structures—consider a refresher course if your last dive was over six months ago.

  • Medical Clearance: Standard ‘Fit to Dive’ from a dive physician if you have any respiratory, cardiovascular or neurological history.

3. Dive Plan & Buddy System

  • Site Briefing: Always attend the full boat briefing: entry/exit points, max depth, dive time, emergency procedures.

  • Buddy Check: Use a firm “BWRAF” check (Buoyancy, Weights, Releases, Air, Final OK) with your buddy and guide.

  • Surface Marker Buoy (SMB): Deploy when ascending from deeper dives or if surfacing away from the boat.

4. Marine Life Interactions

  • Respect Distance: While encounters with ragged-tooth sharks or turtles can be thrilling, maintain at least 3 m from large creatures and 1 m from smaller reef fish.

  • No Touching Policy: Corals and invertebrates are fragile—avoid fin kicks near reef walls to protect both yourself and the reef.

  • Safe Photography: Use passive lighting (strobes off) to prevent startling animals; approach slowly from the side rather than head‑on.

5. Emergency Preparedness

  • Oxygen & First Aid: Confirm the boat carries a working oxygen kit, defibrillator and first‑aid supplies.

  • Emergency Exits: Know the fastest return-to-shore point and nearest recompression chamber—Durban’s chamber is ~3 hours by road.

  • Communication: Marine VHF or cell‑phone (in reception zones) for coordinating rescue if separated.

6. Environmental Responsibility

  • Marine Protected Area Rules: No collecting souvenirs and adhere to no‑take zones.

  • Waste Management: Ensure operator practices “Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but bubbles.”

  • Citizen Science: Consider participating in local reef surveys with organizations like Sodwana Bay Dive Centre’s monitoring programs.
